E3 2020 Moving ‘Full Speed Ahead’ Amidst Coronavirus

On Track For an Exciting Show

As the Coronavirus continues to spread, the list of major companies announcing their withdrawal from gaming events around the world has been staggering. It’s no surprise then that there’s been much concern voiced about the status of the upcoming E3 2020 scheduled for June 9th. Thankfully, we were recently updated on the state of the event – and it’s looking good.

With the Game Developers Conference having just been canceled (potentially postponed), Patrick Klepek of Vice Games was able to get into contact with the Entertainment Software Association (ESA), who is responsible for the organization of E3. Representatives had this to say when asked about the status of the upcoming event:

“Everyone is watching the situation very closely. We will continue to be vigilant, as our first priority is the health, wellness, and safety of all of our exhibitors and attendees. Given what we know at this time, we are moving ahead full speed with E3 2020 planning. Exhibit and registration sales are on track for an exciting show in June.”

Keep in mind that with the rapid spread of a disease such as the Coronavirus, things are subject to change literally at any second. If you’re planning on attending E3 in June, be sure to prepare for the possibility of a cancelation.

Klepek also commented on the recent news of the cancelation of GDC, writing on Twitter:

“To give a sense of how weirdly this was starting to play out at different game companies, here’s how one high-profile studio was considering approaching GDC as late as yesterday: One high-profile developer, who asked to remain anonymous because he was not authorized to speak on the subject, told VICE Games its employer was offering to cover the costs of anyone attending GDC out of pocket. That same developer was already fronting the cost to send some employees to give talks, and decided to let individuals make the choice on whether to attend. If they went to GDC, however, there was a chance they may be required to work from home for some period, rather than immediately returning to the office.”
