Sega has announced that the latest Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Games release will have a mobile exclusive spinoff game entitled “Sonic at the Olympic Games.” The game is set to hit Android and IOS on May 7 this year.
Players are able to pre-register for the mobile title as of today. Sega is incentivizing pre-registration by offering in-game rewards for all players based on how many players register before the launch date. The rewards are as follows:
- 100,000 pre-registrations will unlock the “Ocean View” music track from Team Sonic Racing
- 300,000 pre-registrations will unlock Training Points that can be used to unlock events and special skills
- 500,000 pre-registrations will unlock the badge featuring Miraitowa, the Tokyo 2020 mascot
Sega has said that further awards will be announced if registrations exceed the 500,000 mark.
A trailer was released for the game which depicts the story and gameplay for Sonic at the Olympic Games. The story is that Dr. Eggman is trying to take over Tokyo. Sonic challenges Eggman to a series of Olympic events and whoever wins will get to keep the city.
The game promises 15 Olympic events including Long Jump, Karate, and more. Each event plays differently and each Sonic character has their own individual strengths and weaknesses. Alongside the main events are a collection of mini games.
Sonic at the Olympic Games has a global leaderboard as well as daily challenges for players to complete. There appears to be async chromous multiplayer as players can compete against each other high scores in different events. The sprinting event depicted in the trailer shows Sonic preparing to race against what appears to be another player’s ghost data, similar to time attack mode in most racing games.
The actual Tokyo 2020 Olympics are set to run from July 24 to August 9.
