Rainbow Six Siege Cross-play for Playstation 5 and Xbox Series X Being Discussed

“(Cross-play) is more a discussion between Microsoft and Sony.”

Rainbow Six Siege fans will be happy to hear that their favourite games will be available on the new-gen from release. With PC’s player base already taking up a large portion of the population, they are taking steps to prevent fragmenting the console community. The most important of which is the cross-generational play, which will allow players on Xbox One and Playstation 4 to play with those on the new generation. Furthermore, Rainbow Six Siege cross-play between consoles is something that Ubisoft is ready to implement, as long as Sony and Microsoft can come to an agreement. This could be a huge boon for the console player base if it goes through as planned.

Leroy Athanassof, game director for R6, was interviewed by Windows Central where he went into the details of the game on the new generation. Regarding the cross-play, he had this to say: “This is more a discussion between Microsoft and Sony. We would love to be fully cross-play — have Xbox players matchmaking against the PlayStation players. We are ready to support that. And hopefully, this will happen because as I said, it’s a general move in the industry, and there is nothing that can prevent that. It’s just a matter of time before it happens.”

In the same interview, he also confirmed that the game will be available on the release of the consoles. “Why I can’t give you a date is because those dates are, in the end, on the people doing the next-gen consoles. What I can tell you is that we are going to be on from launch. When they will release the consoles; but it’s up to them to agree that. For Siege, our target is to be available right at launch.”

Hopefully, the conversation between Sony and Microsoft goes smoothly. Rainbow Six Siege cross-play between the new generation just feels like the right move, and probably the right move for any competitive video games that rely on healthy player numbers for competitive matchmaking.
