Granblue Fantasy Versus off to a Strong Launch in Japan with 150,000 Units Shipped

Western Release Coming Next Month

Granblue Fantasy Versus for the PS4 launched on February 6th in Japan. The game is looking like a sure success in the sales side with 150,000 units being sold on day one. With the international release still coming later on March 3rd, the momentum isn’t expected to stop anytime soon.

Granblue Fantasy: Versus

Developed by Arc System Works that brought us Dragon FighterZ and GuiltyGear, Granblue Fantasy Versus is a fighting game adaptation of Cygames’s mobile title. Boasting Arc System Works’s beautiful art style, intricate gameplay, and professional polish, the title has been highly anticipated by the fighting game community.

Unsurprisingly, the developers have confirmed continued updates to the game, including competitive balance patches and new characters. The first season pass has already announced the inclusion of Chaos Bringer, Narmaya, Soriz, and Djeta. Developers have expressed an interest in a port to PC, but it doesn’t seem like it is on the development pipeline anytime soon. Perhaps after an international success, they may consider it more seriously.

The game is attempting to lower the barrier to entry to fighting games, which can be daunting for new players. Including a cooldown system of special moves that can be activated with a single button press, new players should be able to enjoy the game without running into a skill spike so early. Experienced players will be rewarded with lower cooldowns if they are able to execute special moves with command motions. The game also includes a singleplayer and coop mode in a side-scrolling beat-em-up to incentivize non-competitive players to pick up the game as well. Considering the game based off of from a mobile gacha game, this was probably a very wise decision on the developer’s part.
