Sony Officially Skipping E3 Yet Again

They Might Not Be Coming Back

In a move sure to have no long-term consequences whatsoever, Sony is skipping E3 2020. For the second year in a row, the gaming giant is opting out of the biggest games event of the year. If people weren’t nervous before about the future of E3, they sure are now! Sony made a statement to Gamesindustry.biz, some of which you can check out below:

2017 Playstation E3 Showcase skipping E3

After thorough evaluation SIE has decided not to participate in E3 2020. We have great respect for the ESA as an organization, but we do not feel the vision of E3 2020 is the right venue for what we are focused on this year. We will build upon our global events strategy in 2020 by participating in hundreds of consumer events across the globe. Our focus is on making sure fans feel part of the PlayStation family and have access to play their favorite content. We have a fantastic line up of titles coming to PlayStation 4, and with the upcoming launch of PlayStation 5, we are truly looking forward to a year of celebration with our fans.

Although Nintendo started this trend years ago, the biggest companies have been slowly drifting away from the convention format over the years. News cycles are getting shorter, the frequency of major events is growing larger, and things like E3 are being left in the dust. Now that Sony is for sure splitting off from E3, will other companies continue to follow suit?
