Make Room, Mario
With the exception of the Luigi’s Mansion series, Mario has always been the brother in the spotlight. Super Mario Bros., Mario Kart, Super Mario 64, Mario Party, Mario Tennis, Paper Mario, Super Mario Sunshine, Super Mario Galaxy, Mario Maker, Super Mario Odyssey; everything is focused on Mario. Even in the movie with Bob Hoskins, Luigi’s last name is Mario. It seems that they only time they are both center stage is in the Mario and Luigi series. Last week, Nintendo filed a new trademark for the series, so that should give hope to fans of the games.
The first of the games, Superstar Saga came out in 2003 on the Gameboy Advance. It was followed by Partners in Time and Bowser’s Inside Story on the Nintendo DS, and then Dream Team and Paper Jam on the 3DS. A couple of compilations and bundles of these games have been ported to the 3DS, but it has been about 5 years since a new Mario and Luigi game has come out. All of the games in the series, as well as Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020, were developed by AlphaDream, but late last year, they filed for bankruptcy.
Even though the main Mario and Luigi development team is gone, Nintendo might still have plans for it. Either that or they might just gripping their IP tightly. It’s been about three years since a brand new Mario game has hit the store shelves, so maybe it’s time for Mario and Luigi to make a comeback.
