Doomed From the Start
In the downtime of the holidays, sometimes you find yourself watching a crappy movie or something. Maybe you’ll put something on while making a big dinner or cleaning up wrapping paper. If you’re one of those family members that puts on a bad movie to signal to everyone that it’s time to leave, there’s something new to make them run like Hell. Doom: Annihilation has started streaming on Netflix. (Un)fortunately, it is only available to our America audience or those with access to the American Netflix library.
This movie no doubt draws comparisons to the 2005 Doom movie with Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and Karl Urban. While Doom: Annihilation is not good by any stretch of the word, it is considered better that the 2005 movie. Not redeemably better, but at least a little bit more enjoyable. Like, if you were to cut off your finger with one of two knives, you would probably rather use the sharper one over the rusty, dull one. But at least now that it is on Netflix, you can judge for yourself without paying anything (besides the subscription fee).
The plot of the movie is pretty predictable. Military forces are called to science-y installation that has invoked something beyond their understanding that now threatens mankind, with a 50/50 chance of having a mad scientist trying to unleash this threat in the name of science. Unfortunately, these kind of movies get made when a video game gets a successful reboot. Doom (2016), Tomb Raider (2013) (which I still maintain is a not-bad movie), and it’s only a matter of time before more Resident Evil movies are made. So, watch the movie if you want, or don’t. All you have to lose is a couple of hours. Doom: Annihilation is streaming on Netflix.
