Physical Edition of Overwatch Switch Port Is All but Physical

A Big Ol’ Box of Nothing

Nintendo Switch owners will soon have their Joy-Cons on their copy of Overwatch. There are two ways of getting it: through the Nintendo eShop or going to a store and picking up a physical copy; whichever you prefer. There’s just one thing that’s kind of off about the latter way of getting the Overwatch Switch port. There is no game. This isn’t a “there is no spoon” kind of thing, there is no Overwatch cartridge. Open up the case and there is a code for the game.

Overwatch Switch

If you are puzzled by this information, that’s good. It means you aren’t insane. On one hand, Overwatch is an entirely online game. It makes sense that you would you download it because every aspect of it requires you to have an internet connection. You want to play? Go online. You need to update? Go online. Makes sense. On the other hand, why have a physical option at all? Sure, maybe you are gifting it to someone and want to wrap it up or something. Maybe your grandparents are getting it for your birthday and still don’t quite understand the concept of digital copies. Nintendo could just print the codes on plastic or fancy cardboard like they already do with their eShop gift cards.

It is important to have physical presence in stores. Banners, posters, and all that make a lot of sense. It just seems that Nintendo elected the option that was most expensive for themselves and unnecessarily environmentally unfriendly. If you’re picking up Overwatch on the Switch, do yourself a favor and just download it from the eShop. Overwatch on the Switch comes out on October 15th.
