But Is it a Battle Royale?
During a press event in LA, Infinity Ward let people play around with the upcoming Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, naturally. It focused on multiplayer, emphasis on multi. You have your standard 10 v 10, a big team deathmatch 20 v 20, but then they bring out the big guns… and I’m not talking about big guns. The Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Ground War mode will have more than 100 players in a single game. Enough to make Battlefield tremble.
For a while first-person shooter fans have argued over which is better, Battlefield or Call of Duty. While many accept that those games take very different approaches to multiplayer, that may change with Ground War. Traditionally, Call of Duty has had relatively quick matches in small-scale skirmishes. Battlefield often focuses on large-scale battles with large teams, involving both ground troops and vehicles. Having Ground War supporting around 100 players, that almost guarantees huge maps and means to traverse said maps. This kind of formula makes it sound pretty similar to the Battlefield way of play.
This would not be the first time Call of Duty has taken inspiration from other shooters to make something of their own. Blackout’s battle royale gametype was to get in BR hype and it is definitively COD. Ground War may appear to be moving in on Battlefield’s territory, but we shall see if Infinity Ward can make it different enough to make people more interested. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare will be would on October 25th on PC, Xbox One, and PS4.
