Russian Officials Believe Metal Gear Franchise Is a US Intelligence Attack

US? Intelligence?

So, conspiracy theories are not uniquely Western ideas fed by misinformation. They also exist overseas. Maybe they are a US export or something. Anyway, there are Russian officials who believe that they are under cyber attacks by the US. While that is likely to be true, they believe the attack is coming from the Metal Gear franchise. You know, the Japanese made video game series. And their rationale behind this accusation is pretty rich coming from Mother Russia, you know, considering the fact that they are Russian.

Metal Gear Franchise

Deputy Defense Minister Andrei Kartapolov says “Internet projects of the American special services, such as … Metal Gear and RuNet Echo are aimed at direct manipulation of the public consciousness, especially among the youth.” RuNet Echo is an English-language service that covers news from Russian-speaking internet sources. Metal Gear is a bipedal tank, capable of launching nuclear weapons from anywhere in the world! It is also fictional… Kartapolov says these projects aim to sow political unrest in Russia and dissatisfaction with their “civilized state, cultural ideology and religious identity.” As if Russia needs anyone else’s help to do that.

If you had any reason to think that Konami has anything to do with this, Kartapolov also mentioned that NATO countries “discredit Russia, and portray it as an authoritarian country with a barbaric and backward population and government that doesn’t comply with international law.” In other news, Non-NATO country Russia also portrays Russia in this way. To be fair, the Metal Gear games revolve around the Cold War and involve the now defunct Soviet Union, but they do not exactly portray America as the shining example of justice either.

Do you think Russia is giving the US government a little too much credit for something they have nothing to do with? Let us know in the comments below.
