Keanu Reeves Talks Cyberpunk 2077
In a huge moment during Microsoft’s conference during E3 2019, Keanu Reeves brought down the house announcing that he would play a role in Cyberpunk 2077, a Johnny Silverhands, before introducing a brand new trailer for the incoming title. Recently, the famous actor talked about his involvement with Cyberpunk 2077, including what attracted him to the role in CD Projekt RED’s game.
In an interview with IGN Keanu Reeves talked about why he wanted to be a part of Cyberpunk 2077. Here’s what he had to say, “Part of the attraction for me was that not only was it my face, but they were asking me to perform a role, and a cool one. I really love the format of the game and some of the questions it asks, what’s revealed, and what it demands of the player. There’s some interesting choices that have to get made.”
As you might remember, back in 2003 Keanu Reeves was also a part of Enter the Matrix, playing Neo, his character from the movies. In the 16 years since then, Reeves said he noticed just how much video game technology has come along way. “For me, the technology of motion capture has gotten a little quicker. When I first did face capture, I think it was an array of cameras and it was blacked out in a tent. It was a huge deal that there was five terabytes. They had five terabytes to do this capture. It felt like some black ops thing. OK, this is super secret hardware, doing super secret tech stuff, and it probably was, right?”
Now despite his role, Keanu Reeves says that he’s not an expert on the lore associated to the Cyberpunk tabletop universe, or Johnny Silverhands. Regardless, he states how he was attracted to the idea that Cyberpunk offers players a large variety of choices. “I’ve got a couple people who I’ve worked with who’ve done voices in games.” Reeves continued saying, “I hadn’t done that yet. For me I was attracted to the storytelling. The different versions. It’s not just choose-your-own end but choose-your-own path in a weird way, which I thought was cool. There’s so many massively multiplayer games and this one is kind of your own private, almost cinematic experience. Even reading it, it’s almost like literature in a way, right? You’re participating in this open world but it’s your story, your choices.”
What’s even more is that Reeves answered the biggest question the fans have been wondering since the huge announcement at E3: how often players will get to interact with his character. Okay, well maybe not entirely. Though he didn’t mention how often, he made it clear that players would get to interact more times than a single interaction. “My character Johnny interacts with the role-player. So I interact with whoever is playing that and I’m part of their journey, but they’re also part of mine, so you know, you’ll see what happens.”
