Days Gone’s Huge Open World Was Designed by a Team of Five to Six Developers

Days Gone’s Open World Was Apparently Designed By a Pretty Small Developer Team

The open world map of Days Gone is pretty massive and it’s filled with a lot of content to complete, so one likely presumed that the Bend Studio team that designed it must’ve had a lot of members. Instead, it turns out that the open world design team for the game was only comprised of about five to six developers.

“The thing I’m most proud of is how diverse and dynamic we were able to make the open world with such a small open world design team (5-6 people),” said Eric Jensen, a Bend Studio lead open world designer, during a Wednesday Reddit AMA for the game’s developers. “We had to think smart and efficient with all of our design choices knowing the man power limitations.”

“Seeing all of the crazy videos and screenshots that people have posted of the open world coming for Deacon or even interacting with itself has been incredibly cool for our team to see!” Jensen continued.

While Days Gone didn’t garner the critical acclaim that other PS4 exclusives (such as Marvel’s Spider-Man or God of War) received, the game’s open world was considered to be one of its positives.

“Where other open worlds can feel constructed or handcrafted, Days Gone feels wild,” the author of our review wrote. “Untamed. Big chunks of the map are devoid of human influence, with only burned out cars to remind you they were once there. At a glance, there’s not much to see or do, but as the hours stacked up the care and attention that went into building the map became more apparent.”
