The Minecraft Movie Isn’t Coming Out Until 2022 Now

Minecraft Movie Release Date and Plot Details Revealed

The live-action Minecraft movie, which has been talked about for years now, has settled on a new and hopefully concrete release date. Developer Mojang announced on their website that the film is now scheduled to release on March 4th, 2022.

Mojang also shared new story details for the full-length feature film. It involves “the story of a teenage girl and her unlikely group of adventurers. After the malevolent Ender Dragon sets out on a path of destruction, they must save their beautiful, blocky Overworld.”

In the directing chair is Peter Sollett (Nick & Norah’s Infinite Playlist) with publishing rights coming from Warner Bros. Directors previously attached to the project included Shawn Levy (Stranger Things) and Rob McElhenney (It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia), both of whom dropped out for various reasons.

“Since we’re a game developer first, making a movie will be new and very exciting,” said Mojang. “And while the movie has to be different from the game (otherwise, you’d be in for an infinite movie in very low resolution) one thing will definitely be the same. We want to make the movie — just as we make the game — for you. We’re inspired by countless things, but none as much as the incredible stuff our community creates in Minecraft every day.”
