Chrono Trigger Beats Breath of the Wild and NieR: Automata
Chrono Trigger, the historically popular SNES RPG released in 1995, has been voted the best video game of the current era of Japan, the Heisei period. Okay, so maybe a bit of background first.
You see, there are basically periods of years that are defined as eras by Japanese officials and often based on emperors. The Heisei period is the current era of Japan and is scheduled to end on April 30th after beginning all the way back in 1989.
So naturally, Japanese magazine Famitsu decided to run a poll to determine what is the best video game of the Heisei period. With such a large time frame, you would think the poll would have skewed to more recent and popular games, but — after 7000 votes — it was Chrono Trigger that took the top vote.
Chrono Trigger was something of a dream collaboration when it was released in 1995. Developed by key Square talent, the game is considered one of the best RPGs of all time. Outside of the SNES, it’s been re-released on numerous platforms including the original PlayStation, DS, and iOS and Android.
Taking the second and third place votes were The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and NieR: Automata respectively, both of which were released in 2017.
