Nintendo Switch Outsold the PS4 by A Lot in Japan for 2018
There’s no denying that the Nintendo Switch has seen some huge success worldwide and just last week we told you that analysts believe this will be the console of 2019. Earlier today Japanese firm Media Crate released the final sales data for the consoles sold in the last week of 2018. As a result, this data has put the final piece together for estimates of how both the PS4 and Switch sold in Japan for the entire year.
In 2018, the Nintendo Switch sold twice as many units as the PS4 within Japan. If you’re wanting to find out the specific numbers, the Switch sold a whopping 3,534,165 units in Japan, while the PS4 and PS4 Pro together sold 1,726,031 units. In comparison to the sales numbers worldwide, the PS4 is leading the pack with 91.6 million units sold as of the end of 2018, while the Switch has sole 22.86 million units as of the end of September 2018.
Of course while the Nintendo Switch is a lot newer, there were arguably a lot more big games released for the PS4 in 2018 including Monster Hunter World. What makes this even more crazy is that these Switch sales have officially put the console over the 7 million mark, closing in on the PS4’s 7.7 million units very quickly and that’s within less than half the time that the PlayStation 4 has been on the market for.
So why has the Switch seen so much success in Japan? It’s thought that while it can be referred to as a console, the market in Japan is dominated by mobile games, and therefore the appeal is in its portability. Without a doubt, this feature of the Switch has allowed Nintendo to gain a bigger foothold in the industry there.
What do you think? Are you impressed by this success? How many units do you believe the Switch will sell in Japan? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below and don’t forget to keep it locked for updates!
