That Smile Better Brighten Your Day
Another day, another killstreak. Though, the issue between Activision and fans is that another day means another dollar. This time, the Call of Duty publisher has delivered a new smiley face reticle for players who want to spruce up their kill sights, which many players might enjoy if they didn’t have to dish out $2.00 in a game that costs $60.00.
The Call of Duty publisher treated newbies to a free trial of there battle royale mode, Blackout, this past weekend, but they seem intent on taking as much as they give. The smiley face reticle is available for 200 COD points, purchasable via real-world cash only. That’s twice the cost of the red dot sight that went for sale on Christmas of last year. Now, this is nothing more than a cosmetic microtransaction, but when you consider how the sight was free in previous COD games, it pricks a point of contention.
Call of Duty: Black Ops 4, as our own review will attest, excels in just about every aspect of gameplay. The lack of a singleplayer campaign notwithstanding, some players still debate on whether it constitutes a full game. The problem with microtransactions like the smiley face reticle, though relatively cheap, is that they’re a reminder of Activision’s bottom line. As it is, the player base has already been split by the $49.99 season pass. Therefore, as time goes on, this games-as-a-service model may eventually feel barren in content but not in in-game purchases. Additional microtransactions may only exasperate the situation.
