The Outer Worlds Producer: “An Obsidian Fan Will Love This Game”

Sure, It Looks Like Fallout in Space

The Game Awards marked a hype-filled first week for the month of December, and understandably so. Alongside major announcements and updates, we received our first look at several indie gems. Among those that got the most people talking was Obsidian’s The Outer Worlds, which couldn’t come at a better time.

As indicated by the trailer, The Outer Worlds is a first-person (maybe third-person?) RPG set on the fringes of space. Populated by a cast of colorful characters, the world teases a fun-filled journey influenced by player choice. In that regard, even from a visual standpoint, the game is incredibly reminiscent of the Fallout series. This makes sense since the original creators are helming this project. Senior Producer Matthew Singh mentioned the fact in an article from MMORPG.com:

“I think anyone that is an Obsidian fan will really enjoy this world,” wrote Singh. ” It’s something that I think a lot of people have been clamoring for from us. We have a pedigree with Tim and Leonard at the helm here. We get to finally make this kind of game that we’ve been wanting to make for a long time with the partnership with Private Division we’re getting the chance to make. If you like the style of classic RPG Obsidian experience that we tend to create, you’re going to love The Outer Worlds.”

Of course, when we think of Obsidian games, we think of Fallout: New Vegas and Pillars of Eternity, as well as other genre-defining classics like Knights of the Old Republic II. Player choice has factored heavily into the developer’s best games, and according to Lead Designer Charles Staples, the same element with make The Outer Worlds special.

“We’re using all the experience that we have,” said Staples. “Tim and Leonard’s experience with making games, Obsidian’s experience in making the games that we love to make and working with Private Division to work on this whole new IP that really focuses on all of our experience on what we’ve done before into a new single-player role-playing game experience.”

Stay tuned for more The Outer Worlds news in 2019, the year it releases for PC, Xbox One, and PS4.
