GOG’s Twitter Account Jokingly Used Transgender Rights Hashtag to Promote Games

GOG’s Twitter Account Causes Controversy Yet Again

A Monday tweet made by GOG’s Twitter account that jokingly used the transgender rights hashtag #WontBeErased was promptly deleted that same day. “Classic PC games #WontBeErased on our watch. Yeah, how’s that for some use of hashtags,” the tweet read.

After receiving much criticism, GOG tweeted a statement on Tuesday that aimed to explain the reasoning behind the controversial joke but did not apologize for the joke itself.

“Yesterday, we posted a tweet containing a trending hashtag as a pun,” their statement read. “The tweet was neither intended as a malicious attack, nor as a comment to the ongoing social debate. GOG should focus only on games. We acknowledge that and we commit to it.”

The aforementioned “trending hashtag” is a result of a recent New York Times report about a memo from the Donald Trump administration that revealed that the administration wants to have a person’s sex only be legally defined as what they were assigned at birth under a federal civil rights law known as “Title IX”.

The #WontBeErased hashtag is meant to be an act of protest against this government memo from those who are transgender or support transgender rights.

This isn’t the first time that GOG’s Twitter account has received criticism for what many viewed as insensitive humor. In July 2018, the account tweeted a controversial GamerGate joke about games journalism.
