Shadow of the Tomb Raider Day One Patch Changed The Ending

Too Many Spoilers To Keep

A recent report from Kotaku has revealed that a Shadow of the Tomb Raider Day One patch came with a completely different ending. A user named Tombstone discovered that the ending they’d seen and the one everyone else knew about were totally different. It was assumed that one party was lying until video evidence was provided. Surprise, they totally weren’t! Spoilers ahead, you guys.

Shadow of the Tomb Raider

Even that wasn’t quite enough until other people came forward having seen this mysterious ending. So long as you never installed the patch data, you too would have seen the ending in question. The original ending featured a letter from Jacqueline Natla, a major villain from the original Tomb Raider games. This would be a pretty serious reveal for the next entry in the series, especially as she’s never been in the rebooted games before.

Eventually, Square Enix piped in to confirm that yes, this ending was originally in the game before the Day One patch. According to Square Enix, “During the course of development on Shadow of the Tomb Raider, multiple post-credits scenes were explored. Unfortunately one of the directions that was considered, but not chosen, was mistakenly included in the game.” In other words, oops. Turns out revealing the name of the next game’s antagonist in a post-credits sequence was a mistake after all. You can check out footage of the original ending below.
