Prototype Cuphead Assets Shown Off On Twitter

Studio MDHR Showing Us How It All Began

The team at Studio MDHR showed off some fascinating assets recently on Twitter. The short gif gives fans a look at some incredibly early prototype Cuphead assets, an animation detailing where the team wanted their future project to go. What you see is nothing like the finished product, which is truly curious.

Cuphead Balloon Boss (1280x720)

While the animation in question has none of Cuphead’s signature style, the essential gameplay elements are still present. You can see a huge, screen-filling boss engaging in attacks that alter the environment. There’s a series of moves that need to be dodged, as well as a variety of enemy states that accompany each attack.

The prototype is a simple Flash game short called “Jay & a Slushie.” There’s absolutely nothing of Cuphead in it but the giant boss, but you can still easily discern the DNA of the final product in this brief animation. This kind of behind the scenes stuff is an excellent example of how drastically a project can change from conception to completion. Cuphead is currently available on both the Xbox One and the PC, with an expansion called The Delicious Last Course set for release in 2019.
