Nvidia Highlights Ray Tracing Capabilities of New GPU Line
During their conference today at Gamescom 2018, Nvidia unveiled a new set of consumer-level graphics cards focusing on “real-time ray tracing effects.”
For the first time in the company’s history, the Titan variant will be released alongside the new 2080 card, along with an ever so slightly lower tier card, the 2070, which has yet to get a release date. The 2080 and its Ti counterpart will release on September 20th, and pre-orders are already live over on Nvidia’s website. The Ti will also receive a founder’s edition, which will feature slightly stronger overclocking capabilities than the other cards.
The new RTX cards are powered by a new Turing GPU architecture, and promise up to 6x faster performance than current cards, as well as “powerful AI enhanced graphics.” Ray tracing is a little difficult to explain – a demo on the website shows the difference between the reflections on a car during an explosion in Battlefield V with and without the feature. Without it, you can only see a smidgen of light against the front of the car, but with it on, you can see basically the entirety of the explosion and a person standing in front of it in the reflection of the car door. Pretty impressive stuff!
The new cards are priced as follows:
- GeForce RTX 2080 Ti: $1,199 USD
- GeForce RTX 2080: $799 USD
- GeForce RTX 2070: $599 USD
You can find more graphs and specs and all that fun stuff over on the official Nvidia website. In the meantime, let us know if you’ll be picking up one of these bad boys in the comments, and stay tuned to COGconnected for all the latest gaming news!
