Mike Pondsmith Talks Tangible Science in Cyberpunk 2077
CD Projekt RED is going deeper into what makes a great game, and that’s immersion. For the sake of immersion, Cyberpunk 2077 devs sought to root the game’s lore facets into reality. Since brain implantations are not a real thing yet, however, the pen and paper creator found the next best thing.
Speaking to IGN, Mike Pondsmith, creator of the Cyberpunk pen and paper RPG, talked about the insight that went into creating the experience. In order to make the world believable, they researched technology they thought would plausibly exist in the future. Among the things that could be “tangibly” part of reality, he listed cyberware brain implants. To learn more about this technology’s potential, he actually sat down and spoke to a neurosurgeon.
“What I love about the PnP is the reality of it,” Pondsmith said. “The fact that we didn’t just pull the ideas, the concepts, and the technology out of nowhere. We built them on things that we could actually tangibly back in reality. For example, we did cyberware. We sat down with a guy who’s a neurosurgeon, and we said ‘how do we make this stuff work? How do we implant it? What’s the surgical procedure? What can we get away with?”
When you take something out of this world but build its fiction around something that’s real, you get realism. Thereafter, you get immersion. And the fact that CD Projekt RED is building on this source material that’s already done its research makes me more excited for the game. If The Witcher 3 is any indication, then the Polish studio will undoubtedly build a game that’s both stunning and jam-packed with great storytelling. Incorporating actions with consequences will, without a doubt, enhance the story. What are your thoughts on this news regarding Cyberpunk 2077? Comment down below.
