Donut County Swallows Up Your Life Later This August
You may have missed it during this year’s E3 but the upcoming indie title Donut County is shaping up to be a promising “reverse-Katamari” style game, and the new release date announcement trailer captures that essence perfectly.
Inspired by a Peter Molyneux parody twitter account (Peter Molydeux), Donut County began to come to fruition at a game jam before developer Ben Esposito decided to mull it into a full game complete with a storyline revolving around an “idiot” raccoon.
Players take on the role of a hole in the ground controlled by the idiot raccoon, who is using it to suck up everything it can wrap itself around in each level. The story is told through a series of flashbacks from a group of hole-survivors who may or may not now be stuck underground for the rest of their lives.
“I went through a lot of iterations until I landed on what I have, which is you play as this idiot raccoon who you can kind of understand why he’s doing this and why he doesn’t think it’s a problem,” Esposito says of the game’s story. “But the irony in the entire game is that everyone in the world, including the player, knows that the main character is an idiot. It’s about changing his mind.”
Speaking with IGN, Esposito opened up about some of the inspirations behind the game including the music of Bruce Springsteen and his affinity for Los Angeles and the surrounding area.
Donut County lands on PS4, iOS and Mac on August 28th. Let us know what you think in the comments and stay tuned to COGconnected for all the latest gaming news!
