Will Square Enix Finally Deliver the Port?
NieR: Automata became a breakout hit in 2017, which could explain recent developments. Built by Platinum Games, the JRPG was painted as a rather niche title – A year later, the game has sold approximately 2.5 million copies, smashing publisher Square Enix’s expectations. Suddenly, it seems breakout JRPG will be making its way to the Xbox One.
Originally, NieR: Automata released for the PlayStation 4 and PC via Steam. It was never designed to be a PS4 exclusive, but it stuck to one console thanks to financial constraints. According to a French gaming site (via Wccftech), the game will finally make its way to the Xbox One. Considering its success on current platforms, Square Enix may have found the upside of porting the game over to Microsoft’s console. Whether or not it will be upped to 4K for the Xbox One X is up in the air.
Much remains up in the air, however. This is still a rumor until Microsoft or Square Enix officially confirms that a NieR: Automata port is in the works, so I recommend a pinch of salt alongside this update. That said, the French gaming website took to Twitter just to affirm the credibility of their sources. If true, Xbox One users have every reason to be excited. Our very own Nicholas Plouffe gave NieR a 90 in his review. Since then, the game received a DLC that builds on established content. Stay tuned for updates and confirmation.
