Mary Jane Will Be Visible Through More Than Just Cutscenes
One of the most highly anticipated release dates of 2018 has been announced; Marvel’s Spider-Man will arrive on September 7th, 2018 and multiple editions of the game will be available. Now that the cat’s out of the bag, a cookie trail of valuable intel has been left to us.
The following news comes straight out of GameInformer’s latest issue. Every month, a jam-packed issue of worthwhile information and keynotes is made available to subscribers. We’ve gathered a few points about Spider-Man that every prospective player might be interested in learning. To start off, the issue comes with a tidbit about the web-slinger and city traversal, explained by Insomniac Creative Director Bryan Intihar.
“He’s eight years as Spider-Man, so he’s fine-tuned his traversal methods. We didn’t want to stop the players’ momentum at all. If you slam into a building, you run along it or up it, depending on the angle. When you get to the top, you have two options: you can just keep going, which will send you into a midair jump, or you time a button press at the top of the building to catapult you forward to keep your momentum going.”
Jacinda Chew, Insomniac’s art director, then talks about the design of the web-slinger’s costume. The team essentially designed Peter Parker’s outfit from a pragmatic viewpoint.
“If you think about how functional athletic gear is, that’s the same logic we applied to our suit. What it does to support you and allow flexibility, that’s the same logic we used. You’ll see our suit has a lot of paneling, like in athletic gear. One of the main things that’s different about our suit than the classic is he no longer has a red boot. If you’re a 23-year-old, you’re probably not going to wear a red boot. We thought an athletic shoe would be more appropriate for someone that age. The other thing we did was think of the functionality of the suit. The blue is where the suit allows flexibility, and where he has the highest range of motion. Anything that is red is made out of a thicker material for armor reinforcement. It’s where he might get hit the most, or where he might scrape against a building when swinging across the city.”
The article proceeds to confirm some of the various Spider-Man suits we’ll see in the game. Some come with different powers, powers that can actually be transferred between suits. As for how you obtain these suits, you craft them from materials yielded by side-quests and the like. Examples include the Classic Suit, Spider-Punk Suit, Noir Suit, and Wrestling Suit. Being the scientist that he is, Peter Parker is the designer who implements all the bells and whistles.
Furthermore, Bryan Intihar talks about how Peter Parker and Spider-Man’s worlds collide. This leads to Mary Jane’s involvement as a playable character with her own missions and gameplay mechanics. Lead Writer Jon Paquette elaborates on that aspect:
“Like most of us, she started at the bottom, and she’s really got to work her way up. She has to pay her dues. It’s serendipitous that she has Spider-Man next to her and the stories kind of follow him, right? She’s got a partner there, but it is also a complicated relationship. It’s hard for them because they both love each other. They’ve been boyfriend and girlfriend in the past, but they’re both really focused on their careers.”
Confirmed, Spider-Man for the PlayStation 4 will not have microtransactions. There will, however, be a series of DLC, each introducing unique own missions and villains into the game. Thus, expect to see some familiar faces, like the newly confirmed Black Cat. Interestingly, Avengers Tower has been confirmed as existing in the game, but the devs haven’t mentioned any possible hero cameos. Stay tuned for updates.
Happy gaming.
