Recently, new God of War gameplay footage that shows off the new combat system and the climbing mechanics has been released. Some of the exploratory aspects of the game were shown as well, though the game’s creative director, Cory Barlog, has stated in the past that God of War won’t be an open-world game.

While God of War is highly anticipated, its new style of combat has been a divisive issue for series fans. Its critics have knocked the gameplay for seeming to be slow and have said that this style is ill-fitting for a fast-paced action series like God of War while those who defend the new combat system say that this change to the combat is a welcomed one.

Barlog has stated that the reason for the change was to make the combat more “strategic” and “cerebral” than the combat system used in previous God of War games.

“That’s when we really started embracing the fact that not all of God of War has to be charge in, hit and sort of wake up after everything is over, right?” explained Barlog recently. “It just didn’t have that strategic element, that cerebral engagement and all of the pieces that we put together throughout development is that [players] have to think as they’re fighting.”

Despite their obvious similarities, Barlog has stated that his team didn’t want to just “mimic Dark Souls”.

Jason McDonald, the Lead Gameplay Designer for God of War, has maintained that Kratos is still “a powerhouse” in this new game.

God of War is scheduled to come out later this month on April 20th for the PS4.
