Far Cry 5 Graphics Achieve Native 4K on Resolution Xbox One X

Ubisoft Took Advantage of Xbox One X’s Graphical Capabilities

Far Cry 5 has been out since March 27, 2018, but some gamers are still deciding which console to purchase the game for. Digital Foundry examined the PlayStation 4 Pro version and found that it runs 1602p on the system.

“We’ll be examining the Xbox One version of the game in the coming days but first impressions suggest a native 4K resolution versus the lower 1620p on PS4 Pro. There will be more to discuss in the video but if you’re trying to decide between the two, the Xbox One X version has a noticeable advantage.”

Although Digital Foundry’s John Linneman said the game was 4K on Microsoft’s new console, Digital Foundry is still conducting tests to see if it uses dynamic scaling to maintain performance. But so far, it appears to have fixed native 4K presentation.

“I appreciate it but no need to create rivalries” Linneman said in a message board post. “I understand in this case simply because the TAA does result in a softer image but…if you actually count the pixels it comes up as 2160p each time. The only thing I still need to make certain of is dynamic res – I don’t think it’s there but it MIGHT be and that requires lots of additional checks. It’s tough these days!”

It looks like Ubisoft actually took advantage of the 1.8 teraflops difference between the Xbox One X and PS4 Pro to achieve higher resolutions on the former. While upscaling an image from 1620p to 4K creates some blurriness, the Xbox One X’s native 4K presentation creates a noticeably crisp look since no upscaling is involved.

Reviews for Far Cry 5 have been generally positive. Our own Paul Sullivan praised the great open-world, which is “unique and diverse.”

“Hope County is indeed a fantastic open world. The rocky mountain climate is one that has yet to be explored in almost any game like this, and it lends itself really well. I appreciate the balance and restraint that went into the structure. There are no forced icy regions or random volcanoes, and yet the whole thing feels unique and diverse. There’s no shortage of things to do either, and wandering around the wilderness almost always shows off some weird interaction of systems.”

Far Cry 5 is available for $59.99 for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Microsoft Windows.
