Battlefield Is Returning to World War 2 This Year
It seems like World War 2 shooters are back in style nowadays! According to what anonymous sources have told VentureBeat, the next Battlefield game, titled Battlefield V, will be set in World War 2. The game will be revealed soon, according to the report, and it will launch later this year.
The title screen below was leaked to Reddit.
Battlefield fans will remember that last month the Senior Video & Media Director of EA DICE, Randy Evans, tweeted that a trailer for the new Battlefield game was in development. There’s also an earlier rumor from last December about the Battlefield franchise returning to World War 2. However, VentureBeat’s report claims the rumor about a Battlefield: Bad Company game being set in Vietnam isn’t accurate.
Notably, the report claims that if EA was considering another Bad Company game then it would be something that’d be in their “back pocket in case it needs to make another strategic shift in the future.”
VentureBeat explains EA and DICE’s logic about going for a WW2 setting this year:
“They knew they wanted to get away from the modern and near-future settings for a while, but it also didn’t want to burn the WWII setting right away. This led the studio to start with WWI knowing that it could always still go to WWII with the next game if Battlefield 1 didn’t work out.”
The report also cites the immense success of Call of Duty: WWII as one of the reasons why Battlefield wants to go back (forward?) in time for its next game. As of December 2017, the sales for the latest Call of Duty entry have exceeded $1 billion and it is the best selling Call of Duty game since 2012’s Black Ops II.
So Battlefield fans, what do you about this report? Does Battlefield’s return to World War 2 make you want to do “V for Victory” hand signs or are you still tired of WW2 shooters and were hoping for another different setting a la Battlefield 1? Let us know your thoughts!
