You Can Now Start an Xbox Party Chat Straight From Your Phone

Round Up Your Xbox Gaming Pals Anytime, Anywhere

Party chat on Xbox One just became a bit more interesting. After two months of beta testing, Microsoft has rolled out an update for its Xbox app on iOS and Android that enables party chat from your mobile device.

This means you can start communicating with your gaming buddies through voice and text even when you’re away from home. No longer do party chats have to begin from your couch. Now you can open one just as everyone’s about to finish work, or join one to catch up on the progress of a Destiny 2 raid, or even cooler, just leave a party channel open as a temporary group chat with your friends.

It’s pretty straightforward to use too. All you have to do is visit a friend’s Xbox profile within the app, then tap “Invite to Party.” If your friend is already in another party chat, you’ll be able to see and join it as long as its joinable. If you start the party you’ll have access to party controls (including a mute button) and text chat.

This certainly gives Microsoft a slight edge over Sony here as well. While the PlayStation app allows for gamers to communicate with each other using messages, the ability for live voice chat isn’t an option — that is, unless you’re using a third-party service.

Either way, this is a nice alternative for Xbox gamers. It’s also a smart move by Microsoft to launch this feature about a month before Rare’s Sea of Thieves hits stores on March 20th. We can see people using this feature when out and about to round up their pirate crew before heading out on their next big sea adventure.
