For Call of Duty: WWII, the Proof Is in the Pudding
Whatever feelings you may have towards the Call of Duty franchise, the most recent entry — Call of Duty: WWII — has been a tremendous success for the brand after Infinite Warfare failed to live up to critical and sales expectations. Players are flocking to the World War II setting once more, and the player base is proof of that.
According to a post on the forum ResetEra, the player base on PS4 has hit an astonishing 12 million people. A screenshot was taken by forum user “v_iHuGi” showing the impressive number. The user points out that past Call of Duty games like Black Ops 2 usually hit the 10 million mark in January, so for WWII to hit above that in less time is nothing short of amazing. It’s also worth reminding that these numbers are only on PS4. It’s safe to say that the numbers would be even higher when factoring in players on Xbox One and PC. For all the naysayers out there, it appears that Call of Duty isn’t going away anytime soon.
It also helps that Call of Duty: WWII is a genuinely great entry in the long-running shooter franchise. Here’s what we said about the game in our launch review in November:
“In an age where people are dying to play games on retro consoles (NES, SNES Classic) and remastered games still sell surprisingly well, Call of Duty: WWII arrives at just the right time. This throwback Call of Duty game is exactly what the franchise needed. It’s been 10-years since the series has been to World War II and the return is glorious. With a brutally engrossing and punishing, albeit short, single-player campaign and a stripped down multiplayer that remains as tight as ever, Call of Duty WWII gets back to the things that put the franchise on the map. It’s time to reunite the squad with confidence.”
