Nintendo Switch Update v4.0.0 Supports GameCube Controllers

Will GameCube Virtual Console Games Be Announced Soon for Nintendo Switch?

Nintendo Switch firmware 4.0.0 brought about a bunch of new changes for the console including video capture, profile and save transfers, and even hidden USB headphones support. Well, it now seems another hidden feature has been uncovered by Twitter user Master Mewking: GameCube controllers now work with the Nintendo Switch.

Okay, so before you get excited there are caveats and it’s understandable why Nintendo chose not to mention this in the update log. GameCube controller support only works with the Wii U’s USB adapters and it may take multiple attempts before it pairs properly, suggesting from many that Nintendo may still be working out the kinks.

If you’d like to give it a go, simply make it so your Switch can accept wired controllers, plug the Wii U USB adapter into the dock, plug the GameCube controller in, choose to pair controllers, press L and R, and presto! You’re now playing with GameCube power. You can pair four controllers at once.

Once again, before you get excited, it appears the ZL and the Home button on the GameCube controllers don’t work on the Switch. Like we mentioned above, the compatibility is probably still in beta and will be ironed out in a future update.

Regardless, this is great news and is solid evidence to support that Nintendo may be getting actual GameCube Virtual Console games ready for the Switch. That, or it may just be a Pro controller alternative. We’ll just have to wait and see — but hopefully not for too long.
