Will We Actually Get a Gears of War Movie This Time?
Years have passed since Gears of War became a hit Xbox franchise. And nearly as much time has passed since Universal sought to make it into a movie. In the hopes of getting the ball rolling, they’re now reaching out to veteran screenwriter Shane Salerno, whose screen credits includes blockbusters Avatar and Armageddon along with TV series Hawaii Five-O, Oliver Stone’s Savages, and Ubisoft’s Ghost Recon: Wildlands.
Salerno is currently working on the Avatar sequels with renowned director James Cameron, all four of them.
Just last year, new plans for a Gears of War film were announced. Universal, Microsoft, and game developer The Coalition made the announcement together. As a result, we have Scott Stuber and Dylan Clark of Bluegrass Films producing. Stuber’s film credits include Ted, Central Intelligence and Patriots Day while Clark’s include the Planet of the Apes franchise and Oblivion.
In bringing such a beloved franchise to the big screen, Rod Fergusson of The Coalition stated their goals to make it “authentic to Gears of War, but … blow people’s minds because it’s actually a great movie first, and then it pays homage to the source material second.”
Microsoft previously attempted a Gears of War movie, back when it was in the hands of Epic Games. This latest venture will try to succeed where others failed. Producers probably believe reaching out to Salerno will improve their chances.
But what do you think about this? Could Salerno fit the bill for a Gears of War film? Comment down below.
