French and Bolivian Governments Butting Heads over Ghost Recon

Bolivia Unimpressed with Country’s Depiction in Ghost Recon: Wildlands

Bolivia is world-famous for their boisterous cocaine production, although infamous might be a better term. So when Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon: Wildlands depicted the South American nation in this cartel-controlled (read: accurate) light, they were rather upset about it.

According to a report from Dualshockers, Bolivian interior minister Carlos Romero “demanded an intervention from the French government.” The minister added that legal action was an option, although they would “prefer to go the route of diplomatic negotiation.” Romero made a statement to the press, posted on Twitter.

Ubisoft responded by pointing out that the game is a work of fiction. The game company added that Bolivia was chosen not for its robust pharmaceutical economy, but for its “magnificent landscapes and rich culture.” They were also careful enough to clarify that Wildlands “imagines a different reality than the one that exists in Bolivia today.” Coincidentally, one synonym for cocaine is “Bolivian Marching Powder.” No word yet on whether Bolivia will make good on their threats of legal action against the French Government.
