Windows Universal Streaming App, Kodi, Is Coming to the Xbox One

To Believe ‘Kodi’ Began Its Days on the Original Xbox

In conjunction with the announcement of the Windows 10 Creator Update on Wednesday, Xbox announced new software for its consoles; the open source media manager, Kodi, is coming to the Xbox One. Currently ported as a win32 app via Project centennial, the new service will be coded as a native windows app.

Things are coming full circle since Kodi began its life as the Xbox Media Center. Labeled XBMC, it was later utilized exclusively for PCs, witnessing a hiatus from consoles to become open source Project Kodis. This happened after the program was modded so that anyone could modify files, leading to the creative application we see today. Under management of the XBMC Foundation, this open source has progressed as the Window’s go-to streaming service.

“Today we are announcing we will convert our entire Win32 codebase to UWP and publish on Xbox soon,” said Kodi Team Lead Martijn Kaijser. He displayed their app’s success at the Microsoft Windows Developer Day event, stating that Kodi has satisfied over a million customers. And Microsoft will finally deliver the same service to console. This way players can witness a much-improved streaming experience, and devs can follow along with its development and even contribute since it is open source.
