PS4 4.50 Update Brings External HDD Support

4.50 Update Means More Space Without Physically Opening Your System

Sony revealed the details of their upcoming 4.50 update in a blog post this morning.

Along with updates to the notification system, posting updates and custom wallpapers comes the news that external hard drives will be compatible with the PS4. This is an excellent quality-of-life improvement for players who are nervous about performing their own system upgrades. Previously, giving your PS4 more memory meant cracking the system open with a screwdriver and swapping out the drives. With the upcoming 4.50 update, players can rest easy, knowing there’s less chance of them accidentally destroying something for the sake of convenience. Given the size of the average AAA PS4 title, it’s a wonder we didn’t get this sooner.

The update, codenamed “Sasuke,” is entering its beta testing phase today. In addition, anyone with a PSVR headset will also be able to watch 3D blu-rays on their system. Great news if you’re one of the many people who never bought a 3D television.

More features of the 4.50 update will be unveiled in the coming weeks. We’ll keep you posted on any new developments here.
