Epic Space MMO, Elite Dangerous from Frontier Developments Coming to PlayStation 4
Today, Frontier Developments announced that they will be bringing their MMO space explorer, Elite Dangerous to the PlayStation 4 in the second quarter of 2017. Anyone who was excited for the frankly, overhyped No Man’s Sky, should be bouncing off the walls for this game.
Elite Dangerous is truly enormous. Well, maybe monstrous is a better word… What do you call a game with 400 billion star systems to visit, all scaled to proper galactic proportions? And on top of that unimaginable scale, the entire Milky Way is populated with NPCs and other players that are constantly changing the story. You could be bounty hunting in a star system, reliving Cowboy Bebop, and later find yourself hundreds of light years away fighting in an interplanetary war. With No Man’s Sky, the infinitely generating world map was a huge draw. Though Elite’s world is limited, there are easily thousands of hours of strictly exploration in this game. In case you’re still not convinced of the enormity that is Elite Dangerous, here it is long hand: 400,000,000,000 star systems. Each with their own set of say, 12 give or take 7, orbiting planets. We’re not going to do that math because it will explode our calculator. Check out this trailer to get an idea of what Elite Dangerous is all about:
Whether you name your character buttscratcher69 or Captain Picard, You will start out with just a small ship and a small amount of currency with no direction other than to just do you. The story of Elite Dangerous is crafted by the players themselves. Setting out to become the strongest could mean you battle your way through intergalactic conflicts, changing the tides of war for a whole star system. Simply running supplies to earn credits to spend on your ship could lead to a fight for survival against pirates or other players trying to stop your progress.
Multiplayer in Elite Dangerous doesn’t just mean co-op and PVP. Sure you can set out with your friends in this MMO, or you can set out to destroy ships piloted by other players. But the true multiplayer gold comes from interacting with the worlds other players have shaped, or are in the process of disrupting. Your actions, whether magnanimous or selfish, could potentially cause a butterfly effect and be felt by almost every player in the game, or at least all the players within a hundred light years! The world of the game has been evolving since launch so PS4 owners will be joining a world that has its own player-written history. Frontier CEO, David Braben hinted that though the galaxy may seem quiet, “PlayStation 4 players will be joining our galaxy at a very exciting time.”
Elite is not just coming as a direct port to PS4. PlayStation owners get a few exclusive goodies that make use of the unique controller. You will be able to use the DUALSHOCK®4 controller’s touch pad to navigate the map, swiping your way past endless reaches of space to find your target. There will be an option to enable to motion sensors in the controller to let you quickly swivel your view, a feature that may convince some PC die-hards to try this console version. Finally, customizable touch pad ‘hotkeys’ will let you fine tune controls to fit your play style. Theres never been a better time for you PlayStation owners to brush up on your astronomy and get get hyped for one of the best MMOs out there, Elite Dangerous!
