Sega Genesis Officially Back in Production to the Delight of 90’s Kids Everywhere

That’s no clickbait title kids, the Sega Genesis is really and truly back in production. 20 years ago the console was officially discontinued and while there’s been a plethora of knock-off mini versions over the years we now see another company based out of Brazil bringing back the real thing.

Preorders have opened for the TecToy produced ‘All-New Sega Mega Drive Stock’ which is a complete replica of the original console. Perhaps what’s most important to note is that Sega themselves are actually on board this time around. TecToy, who again, are based in Brazil are listed as a licensed manufacturing partner. This hopefully means that the console will be held up to Sega’s standards and that it won’t be a crappy piece of machinery.

What you might be wondering is why on earth would a Brazilian company be the ones to reinvigorate the life of a 20-year-old console? Well, apparently the Sega Genesis still sells upwards of 150,000 units per year in that country. Who knew?

The only major change that TecToy has made to the system was to add an SD slot that will allow you to play the 22 included games:

  • Alex Kidd
  • Alien Storm
  • Altered Beast
  • Arrow Flash
  • Bonanza Brother
  • Columns
  • Decap Attack
  • E-Swat
  • Fatal Labyrinth
  • Flicky
  • Gain Ground
  • Golden Axe
  • Golden Axe 3
  • Jewel Master
  • Kid Chameleon
  • Last Battle
  • Our Runners
  • Sega Soccer
  • Shadow Dancer
  • Shinobi 3
  • Sonic 3
  • Turbo Outrun

The console is available for preorder now through the Brazilian site but be forewarned that  nostalgia is going to cost you. Coming in at a fairly hefty $138 USD it’s certainly not cheap but consider the jealousy you’ll earn from all your friends next June when the system finally releases?
