PS4 Pro Touted As Right Move For Sony, Despite Criticisms

Industry Legend Feels Sony Did The Right Thing With PS4 Pro

Despite the general reception of Sony’s recent announcement of the PS4 Pro, there are others who still feel the company did the right thing in this case. While he may be a relative unknown outside of Japan, Hirokazu Hamamura begged to differ, arguing Sony handled the decision quite well.

For those who don’t know, Hamamura served as the Editor-in-Chief for the insanely popular videogame magazine Famitsu, and is currently President of Enterbrain, as well as director of the Kadokawa Group. So suffice to say, his opinion has at least a little merit in these cases. In his interview with Nikkei, he went on to defend his position about the PS4 Pro. Hamamura noted that it’s common behavior to release a cheaper version of an existing console after a period of time, but in the case of something like the 3DS versus 2DS, it tends to offer either the same or lesser functionality. In the case of the PS4 Pro, Hamamura contends it’s an interesting step as it’s not as common a move in these cases, with it being a direct upgrade pretty much across the board.

Hamamura went on to explain, noting that these kind of moves tend to occur as the market begins to get saturated, and in Sony’s case, they have made bank on the PS4, with it being the fastest selling Playstation console in history. It makes no sense to Hamamura to throw away the entire console base that they have worked so hard to secure. Rather, it makes much more sense with the case of the PS4 Pro to instead offer an upgrade to the existing customers. The early impressions have shown promise for the console’s increased power, but it remains to be seen just how widespread the impact the PS4 Pro will have
