Super Mario Party Video Review – Kind of a Lame Party

Super Mario Party Video Review

Since its inception on the Nintendo64, Mario Party has become one of the staple party experiences in gaming for its ingenuity in creative and colorful mini-games and its ability to tear friendships apart much like Mario Kart. The last few iterations of the series, however, have felt stale, often being repetitive and simply not offering enough content to keep the fans of the franchise happy. With Super Mario Party finally taking its first steps onto the Nintendo Switch, we couldn’t help but be cautiously optimistic that Nintendo’s current trend of making high-quality first-party games would continue onto the franchise that needed it the most. Were they able to deliver? Watch our video review below to find out.

Super Mario Party continues the formula of pitting four players against one another in a competition to earn Stars while playing a wide variety of mini-games. Familiar aspects of the series return with purchasable items, stealing stars, and of course ruining friendships in the most chipper and colorful way possible. While it feels familiar and offers updated graphics and new games, the experience on the whole still simply feels small. With only four boards to play on, a few new yet small modes, and some oddly restricted multiplayer options such as no drop-in and only the host account earning anything from gameplay, this feels like yet another rushed product for the franchise to sell the name rather than giving fans the long-awaited update we’ve been waiting for. It can still be a fun experience, but that same lasting desire to play from the original games just isn’t here due to the limited amount of boards and content.
