Lost Sphear Video Review – This JRPG Plays it A Little Too Safe

Lost Sphear Video Review

Coming into 2018, fans of legendary JRPG developer Square Enix knew that – following the success of their titles from 2017 – they would be going strong into the new year. Lost Sphear is their first big title and it carried quite a bit of buzz around it. With the promise of a familiar game reminiscent of Chrono Trigger or Crystal Chronicles, could such a game really go astray? The end result we got was something recognizable, an experience that gave us deja-vu of some of the best games we had played growing up. The challenge here was identifying if Lost Sphear was greater than – or at least able to live up to – the sum of its parts. Check out our video review below and see what we felt about Square Enix’s first JRPG of 2018.

Lost Sphear is a turn-based JRPG set in a world shattered by lost memories. Players will control Kanata and his friends as they travel the world, regaining lost memories of the broken world around them and using them to piece the land back together. The game features many similarities to classic Square Enix titles like Chrono Trigger or Final Fantasy 3 but is unique in its inclusion of semi-tactical turn-based combat in which attacks can be re-positioned for greater advantage, as well as the inclusion of having large power suits available to the characters. The game, however, fails to present anything that truly makes it stand out among its competitors in the JRPG genre. If you are a fan of classic Square Enix games than this is right up your alley, but as for breaking grounds and continuing the rise of Square Enix? Let’s just call this a plateau in their progress.
