DOOM: Stomp the Spider Mastermind
With the new DOOM comes some new (or returning) bosses to take down. They’re not easy, so here’s a quick guide with our tried and true methods for defeating them without much trouble. Let’s get going on the Spider Mastermind! (Hint: Use the BFG. Use it a lot.)
Spider Mastermind can be tough, especially after it’s been softened up a little bit. For the first third or so of the fight, just try to keep the pillars that pop up between yourself and the boss, strafing back and forth to attack from behind them. If you’re low on BFG ammo, there are two pickups that spawn in the arena to grab. Try to make your way to them while circling around the boss. The Mastermind will start to throw mines at you, first on your right and then on your left – these can be avoided by running up the middle but you’ll end up in dangerous territory. Following the mines, you’ll be attacked by three charged laser shots. You can hop over these, or try to deal enough damage to stun the boss. Go for the stun whenever possible, and don’t forget to hide behind the pillars if you’re close to one.
Once the boss starts to summon several pillars at once and the ground glows blue/purple, hop up to a pillar to avoid the shocked ground. You can wait it out up here, but be careful as spikes might pop out of the pillars, dealing damage and pushing you into the shocked ground. Right when you leap up to a pillar is the best opportunity to use the BFG, as it will stop the shocked ground and stun the boss.
Dealing enough damage leads to the final phase where the Spider Mastermind is hurt and stuck in one spot, acting like a turret. Try to stay away from the sides with lasers and keep unloading. From time to time, the boss will grab a piece of the environment and attempt to hurl it at you: don’t let it. If you can deal enough damage while the projectile is hovering in the air, you can stop the attack. Just keep circling around the pillars and dealing damage until you can perform the final glory kill.
