Rune Factory: Guardians of Azuma (PS5) Review
Back in June of 2025, I played and reviewed an excellent game called Rune Factory: Guardians of Azuma on PC. I was really impressed. It was a well-made, visually polished and fun spin-off of the Rune Factory series formula. And it was a big leap forward from previous series installments. Now, it’s finally come to the PS5. Is it worth picking up?
If you haven’t played Rune Factory: Guardians of Azuma yet, the answer is a resounding “yes.” Just like I said in my first take on the game, this is a deep and robust adventure that will absorb you for many hours. As with all Rune Factory games, Guardians of Azuma is really not one, but many games. It’s an action RPG, a farming sim, and a life sim all rolled into one. It’s got crafting, farming, cooking, city-building, marriage and kids (!) and so much more as well. The amount of sheer content is staggering.
You’ll never lack for “things to do” — and that WAS almost a weakness in previous Rune Factory titles. It didn’t feel cohesive. But Guardians of Azuma integrates all of its parts much better. All the side activities you do help you to build your skills, unlock new content, get better in combat, and further the main quest.
Another strength of Rune Factory: Guardians of Azuma, and a big improvement on its predecessors, is the more linear and clear story. You always know what to do, and where to go next. I like that compared to the more confusing Rune Factory 5, for example, in which I often felt directionless or so sidetracked that I quite literally lost the plot.

Lastly, there’s the improved gameplay mechanics. Rune Factory: Guardians of Azuma gives you lots of quality-of-life upgrades from earlier iterations. Improved menus, for example, make choosing tools easier. Building, farming and cooking all feel easy and satisfying. Playing Guardians of Azuma is fun.
And it’s beautiful. The Japanese theme is rendered in gorgeous color, seasonal variety, and excellent voice-acted scenes. The graphics are crisp and the music is sumptuous. To put it briefly: if you haven’t played this game yet, and you own a PS5, you absolutely should. For so many reasons. This version has everything that the PC version had. And it’s still every bit as great.
But there’s a caveat I’d like to add for some players. If you have played Rune Factory:Guardians of Azuma on PC already, I wouldn’t strongly recommend replaying it on the PS5. Yes, this release does add all of the post-launch DLC. But that is not really story DLC so much as some extra content such as new items, outfits and new areas in the Summer village. You won’t experience a lot of these additions until later in the game. As great as they are, I’m not sure they’re enough to warrant re-purchasing, if you already own it in PC.
But for newcomers to the Rune Factory series, or PS5 owners who’ve not played this title yet, Rune Factory: Guardians of Azuma is a must-play. This is a deep, well-crafted game that’s a blast to play. And that’s still true, even 8 months later.
