Turtle Beach Ear Force Recon Camo Headset Review
Turtle Beach is known for their versatile line up of headsets. From those made for the hardcore or professional gamers to those made for the casual gamer, the company seems to have it all. Now, for those of you who will be running through the trenches in Battlefield or Call of Duty, you can feel like you’re really a part of the fight with the latest headset from Turtle Beach: the Turtle Beach Ear Force Recon Camo Headset. Of course, while this headset was made for those with a love of camo in mind, it definitely works for more than the run-and-gunners of the gaming world.
Right out of the box the Recon Camo headset feels light, yet sturdy, with a relatively thick headband and large cushiony earphones. It is a true representation of what the advertising shows it to be, with a green camouflage headband and speaker ear padding. Unfortunately, even though the camo looks great, the fabric used to cover the headband doesn’t form as well to the rest of the headset, making it look a little cheap. Thankfully, the camo fabric on the speakers makes up for this tenfold, looking just as cool as something straight out of Call of Duty: WWII.
Rest assured that despite how good the speakers look, Turtle Beach did not choose style over substance. The fabric padding on the speakers is comfortable, and the size and shape allow for full ear coverage. The Recon Camo headset is seriously comfortable for those of us who weren’t blessed with the smallest ears the universe has to offer and whether you decide to take the headset out for a walk, or keep it selfishly for gaming, there really isn’t anything to complain about here. The headband of this headset is amply padded as well and the mic is detachable, allowing for flexibility and true comfort no matter how long you decide to play for.

“The Recon Camo headset is seriously comfortable.”
Considering how long I was able to spend gaming without feeling uncomfortable, I played a variety of different games, including Call of Duty: WWII, Agents of Mayhem, and Assassin’s Creed Origins. Let me tell you, they all sound fantastic. Although the Recon Camo headset may not have the superhuman hearing feature of the Stealth 520 headset, for example, the 50mm speakers allow for crisp and reactive sound. The quality is nothing but clear, which definitely comes in handy when you’re trying to react to someone trying to creep up on you in COD. And hell, who doesn’t like to jam out to their favorite artists on their phone and hearing every single guitar strum or drum beat? Although the headset is better suited for gaming within your own living room, it’s nice to know there is the versatility available to take it on the go.
As a wired headset, the Recon Camo headset comes with a 3.5mm jack that works well with multiple platforms. If you’re anything like me, you’ll want to have a headset that is versatile enough to be able to use with your different systems. While I found that the Recon Camo Headset works well with the Xbox One, PS4, and mobile devices, the cord just isn’t long enough to provide a comfortable gaming experience on any desktop PC. Taking into account just how important this aspect is to a lot of people, this is certainly a drawback of having this particular headset wired. Of course, with that said, this particular problem really only negatively affects the PC players out there and allows console players to game in blissful ignorance. And although the wire may not be long enough for the PC players, this headset has convenient in-line controls along the wire that allows for players to change their volume and put their mic on mute with a quick flick of a button. And who doesn’t like that convenience factor in their headset, right?
Now it’s time to answer the question you’ve all been waiting for: is it worth the price at $59.95 USD? If you’re looking for something versatile, sturdy, and comfortable without breaking the bank this may just be the one for you. With that said, this headset is undoubtedly made for the casual gamer in mind, and though it works well enough overall, it just doesn’t feel powerful enough to satisfy the hardcore and professional gamers out there. Either way, if you’re a fan of camo, this headset is sure to delight you!
