The Three Best (and Worst) Video Games from October 2024

The Bad

Metamorphosis VR

Metamorphosis VR is a VR version of the 2020 game, Metamorphosis. Itโ€™s a reinterpretation of Kafkaโ€™s Metamorphosis novella, which allows players to navigate large environments with warped proportions. The game has a lot of technical issues, and there are no options. The motion controls can also be pretty awkward. It just doesnโ€™t run well on Meta hardware. Our reviewer concluded โ€œWhile the story-telling, environments, and narration might intrigue, Metamorphosis VR has too many technical issues to allow one to truly enjoy the experienceโ€. Itโ€™s the first of two lemons on The Three Best (and Worst) Video Games from October 2024.

NHL 25

NHL 25 is a gorgeous game, with janky animations. As I was making The Three Best (and Worst) Video Games from October 2024, I thought to myself โ€œtriple A sports games really seem to fail too much these daysโ€. NHL 25 makes a lot of surface level improvements, but also has a lot of deeper issues that still arenโ€™t being addressed. Our reviewer mirrored my thoughts, and wrote โ€œItโ€™s time EA Sports pivots towards not just enhancing aesthetics but also developing genuinely impactful gameplay systems that resonate with players across all modesโ€. Cโ€™mon EA!

Shadows of the Damned: Hella Remastered

Shadows of the Damned: Hella Remastered scored 70/100, which is still a good score. October was such a phenomenal month that we had to climb the ratings to get something for The Bad section of The Three Best (and Worst) Video Games from October 2024. Shadows of the Damned: Hella Remastered is a remaster of a PS3 era Suda51 game that developed a cult following over the years. Gameplay-wise, itโ€™s a pretty barebones third person shooter, with a Resident Evil 4 camera. But itโ€™s got some very bizarre (and very hit and miss) writing and visuals. Our reviewer wrote โ€œthe action feels frustratingly antiquated. Small additions like a standard action game lock-on or even aiming reticle would have been welcomeโ€. Shadows of the Damned: Hella Remastered wonโ€™t be for everyone, but casual fans of the bizarre should take note.
