3 Up, 3 Down – May 2024

May 2024 looked like it was going to be a slower month for great game releases, but it ended up being phenomenal! Don’t sleep on Madison VR or Homeworld 3. The two games scored 90, and 95, respectively, but still didn’t make The Good section of The Three Best (and Worst) Video Games from May 2024. And without further ado, here are The Three Best (and Worst) Video Games from May 2024:

The Good

Braid: Anniversary Edition

Braid is one of the most important video games of the indie boom during the PS3/ Xbox 360 generation. It’s a 2D puzzle platformer with rewind mechanics, visuals that emulate acrylic paintings, written poems, and some crazy plot revelations. Braid: Anniversary Edition is everything you’d expect from a modern remaster, but adds 40 new levels, and extensive developer commentaries. Our reviewer concluded “Newcomers will be astounded at the quality of what is often considered one of the greatest games of all time”. Even though it released a few weeks late, don’t sleep on this indie classic.

Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door

Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door is a very beloved Nintendo JRPG, that has been trapped on the GameCube until now. This new version doesn’t change much, but is actually a complete remake, with painstaking attention to detail. Our reviewer concluded “Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door is an essential addition to the Nintendo Switch library”. A perfect remake of a classic game makes for easy inclusion to The Good section of The Three Best (and Worst) Video Games from May 2024.

Senua’s Saga: Hellblade 2

Senua’s Saga: Hellblade 2 is the sequel to Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice, which was the most gorgeous indie game, maybe ever. It’s a story driven third person action game with puzzle elements. Our reviewer found this sequel to be incredibly immersive. They wrote “Senua’s new journey is epic and harrowing, told through cinematic visuals. jaw-dropping graphics and gameplay mechanics that feel at one with the story”. Senua’s Saga: Hellblade 2 is the highest reviewed new title on The Three Best (and Worst) Video Games from May 2024.
