The Bad
Crime O’Clock

The first lemon in The Three Best (and Worst) Video Games from July 2023 is Crime O’Clock. It’s another puzzle game with unique ideas. It looks like a Where’s Waldo book, but the player’s objective is to solve mysteries, instead of just finding a dude in a detailed illustration. The game was very appealing at first, but it lost appeal as our reviewer found the gameplay to be very repetitive. Our reviewer wrote “it quickly loses momentum as it struggles to innovate on [its] idea”. A sequel that builds on these ideas sounds pretty tempting.
Enclave HD

Enclave is a 20 year old third person action adventure game that hasn’t aged well. It’s a medieval fantasy story about light vs. dark that feels pretty generic by today’s standards. There’s definitely lots of nostalgic value, if you’re fond of PC adventure games form this era, but this remaster isn’t very good. It’s got lots of technical issues, and was missing some obvious/ easy quality of life upgrades. Our reviewer concluded “I enjoyed my time playing Enclave only because I already knew the game. I don’t feel like enough improvements have been made to hold a modern audience, regardless of how fun it used to be”.
The Signifier VR

The Signifier was a very cool first-person crime investigation game from 2020. Its VR port is an unfortunate downgrade, and an easy part of The Bad section of The Three Best (and Worst) Video Games from July 2023. The gameplay mainly involves crime scene analysis and puzzle solving. The pace is very slow, and will mainly appeal to walking sim or point-and-click fans. Our reviewer found that “the move to VR doesn’t seem to have added much other than slightly downgraded visuals”. So, if you’re curious, stick to the original.
