How Like A Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii Evolves
The Like a Dragon series, formerly Yakuza, has always delivered high-octane combat, balancing brutality with cinematic flair. From Kazuma’s punishing use of the environment to Ichiban’s strategic, turn-based battles, each protagonist’s journey offers exhilarating fights that captivate fans. Majima’s first solo outing carries the signature spirit of Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio but presents it in a fresh and unique way.
Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii takes the ideology of Kiryu’s brawling style and amplifies it to a 100. As Majima is borderline insane, the developers have been able to implement the notion into his frantic method of fighting. Mad Dog Style returns from Yakuza 0 and focuses on his speed and agility. This allows for Goro to overwhelm opponents with his quick movement and knife attacks.
Let’s Dance!
Sea Dog is a new addition and perfectly captures the pirate theme that enshrouds the game. With a cutlass and pistol, you can perform large area-of-effect attacks and also be effective from range. Specials also delve deep into the ludicrous nature of the concept featuring over-the-top attacks that can wipe out enemies in one glorious manoeuvre.
While previous entries have embraced exaggerated combat, none have truly experimented with verticality. Pirate Yakuza changes that, making aerial combat a key feature that sets it apart. You can strike from above, leap to safety, and juggle enemies in mid-air with a flurry of attacks. These mechanics push the game beyond traditional brawling, bringing it closer to a hack-and-slash experience while adding a fresh twist to the Ryu Ga Gotoku formula.
Don’t You Know I’m Loco?
As with other entries in the franchise, weapons play a large part in combat. Whereas Ishin includes swordplay, it’s grounded in the traditional format which makes it feel similar to other entries. Pirate Yakuza instantly feels different. Combat is faster with an acrobatic, free flowing nature which makes fights feel like a violent dance of death. Not only do you have particular items tied to your fighting style but you can also interact with elements in the environment to truly make an impact. With barrels, ropes and much more available, there’s an exciting unpredictability with each brawl.
Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii is a thrilling mix of classic and new combat elements. The absurd premise is used to amplify fights, creating ridiculous and memorable moments that will leave you in hysterics. Each fighting style is fleshed out offering elements that will give you an advantage in key situations. Combining this with the dynamic world and verticality helps to provide a truly incredible experience. While the foundation of the game stays true to its roots, it’s clear to see how the combat has evolved in this release.
