In those long, cold nights, there’s nothing better than staying warm indoors. Rather than trudging through deep snow and foggy evenings, staying cosy and experiencing it all in the virtual realm is far more satisfying. With that in mind, I’ve collated several games that truly nail winter. Check them out below.
Never Alone (Kisima Ingitchuna)
Set in the frozen landscape of Alaska, Never Alone captures the struggles of winter in a way like no other. Fighting against blizzards, harsh winds and much more, you must try to survive while learning about the culture of the Iñupiat people. A truly touching experience, perfect for playing on a cold winter night.
God of War Ragnarök
Winter is used perfectly in Ragnarök. Not only do the cold landscapes evoke a sense of dread, but they also echo the loss that Kratos has faced and the struggles that he is going through. Featuring some of the most memorable action sequences in the genre, this is winter used as both spectacle and storytelling.
Animal Crossing: New Horizons
Sometimes you want to just snuggle up with a hot chocolate and play a relaxing, cosy game. Well, there’s not much better than Animal Crossing in the winter months. With snow that blankets the island and all sorts of holiday-themed items, this is a great way to chill out during the cold evenings.
Rise of the Tomb Raider
Set in the frozen wastes of Siberia, Rise of the Tomb Raider focuses on the idea of isolation and survival. You must hunt, stay warm and explore the icy terrain in order to progress. With danger lurking around every corner, this origin story of Lara Croft is a great adventure to revisit this winter.
The Last of Us Part II
When snow falls in The Last of Us Part II, things become tense. The world is stripped back and every sound you make echoes and footsteps linger. This builds the tension, making each moment carry more weight. Mix in the emotional narrative and you have an experience like no other.
The Division
Winter in New York is iconic. The hustle and bustle on the snow-covered streets is something we have seen in films and TV for years. The Division takes the location and flips it, making the streets a dangerous and desolate place. Fighting to survive, you must search the streets while avoiding or taking on enemies on your journey through the Big Apple.
