The 3 Best (And Worst) Things About Psychonauts in the Rhombus of Ruin

The Worst

Gameplay is just OK

So you’re just teleporting around and never have hands, that’s usually a recipe for some boring gameplay in VR. Even with some Psy-blasts and Pyrokinesis you probably won’t be in awe of any of the mechanics. The story does do a great job of trying to make this sort of limited interaction fit though. Can you buy the explanations and story enough to still enjoy the gameplay? Most likely yes, but if you want interesting mechanics to go along with it you may be disappointed.

As long as a movie

From beginning to end, including watching the entire credits took 2 hours exactly. Is that worth the price? That will depend on the individual ultimately. Since it is as long as a movie, then price wise it’s at least in the ballpark in it’s costs to seeing a 3d movie. In this instance, though you do own it and could play it as often as you wish, but that does lead to the next point.

Little to no replay value

Shorter games or experiences can be perfectly fine, especially if there is some replay-ability involved. Unfortunately, there seems to be little to no replay value here. Psychonauts in the Rhombus of Ruin sits somewhere between interactive story and a full game. It’s a VR version of a point and click adventure game. There can be some replay value to that genre but that’s usually dependent on either some hidden things that might have been missed or trophies. There doesn’t seem to be much in the way of hidden secrets here, although they could just be hidden really, really well. That basically leaves some achievement hunting. There are only 12 Steam achievements to be had and 8-10 of those can be had easily on the first playthrough. Are 2-4 achievements worth another play? That all depends on how OCD you are I guess.

Psychonauts in the Rhombus of Ruin is a fun interactive experience. How have you been enjoying the game so far, let us know in the comments below!
