The 3 Best and 3 Worst Games of November 2018

The Worst

Achtung! Cthulhu Tactics

While we wanted to be optimistic, Achtung! Cthulhu Tactic’s take on lovecraftian horror combined with military tactics didn’t strike fear or passion into anyone’s hearts. No, it’s not always fair to compare every strategy game of its kind to XCOM, but unfortunately there’s a difference between being inspired by another game and recycling a genre’s whole shtick.  The gameplay feels uninspired, and as we said in our review, “it’s not any fun to be the scrooge. I enjoy the idea, the concept, it’s all right on the money. I can’t stand the final product, though.” This one’s more boring than bad.

Corpse Party: Book of Shadows

Corpse Party: Book of Shadows is a sequel to the well-received visual novel Corpse Party, but it’s another game that just doesn’t quite live up to any hype that might be had. Visual novels have a stigma to overcome when it comes to people’s opinions about their worth and value as games, and Corpse Party’s bad writing, inconsistent audio, and shoddy translations only play into those stereotypes. We said in our review that, “Corpse Party: Book of Shadows is, quite frankly, unremarkable.” You’ll forget it by tomorrow morning.

Fallout 76

Now, you just might have heard of this game already, and you might have heard how people feel about it. Fans were hopeful, if skeptical, about Bethesda’s newest Fallout title, especially when it came to the implementation of a new multiplayer open world, but the product utterly failed to live up to its own advertising. Fallout 76 released as an empty, desolate game that might be fun to play with friends but ultimately can’t stand on its own between game-breaking bugs, an outdated engine, and a tedious main story. We said in our review that, “while I applaud taking a chance on a crazy idea, Fallout 76 would undoubtedly have been a better and more engaging experience as a traditional open world RPG. As it stands, this is a broken, unfun, and repetitive title that I can’t recommend. And that hurts me to say.” We all joked, but no one wanted this.
